So my lovely niece is about to graduate frm school thus there's gonna be a prom. How sexciting!! :)
Who else but this Aunty Fashion to be the fashion guru and consultant.
Being the most fashionably updated person amongs my family, i guess it is expected that my cousin (the mom) came to consult me over the ultimate question "What to wear".
Of course I have my ideas on top of my head. But, seriously being out of touch and faaarrrrrr frm my teens, I havent the slightest clue what teenage girls wear to prom these days let alone what "activities" kids do during prom apart from eating and dancing. What to do, we never had proms during our time......don't blame me.
But hey, I was once a teen so I do understand the absolute Teenage rules:
Rule 1: Never "Over dress". Why? Because VERY MALU!!!
Rule 2: Never "Under dress" Why? Because also VERY MALU!!!
Basically, teenages have issues with "face". They are constantly afraid of being embarrassed in front of their peers. It is not easy to dress up a teen.
So....I'm clueless as to what teens wear to proms....
Anyone kind enough to share with me? Especially Malaysian teenagers.......would be grateful for your insight.
do you girls do-up your hair at the saloon for prom night....
do you girls put on make-up.....
do you wear fluffy puffy dresses or just a simple little black number??
anyone have pictures pls share it with me!!!

My sister is playing it safe with a little black dress paired with a classy clutch (stolen from mommy's closet) for her upcoming formal. Although it's more Teen Vogue than Audrey Hepburn than I would've liked, it's great for her age.
We're discussing the pros and cons of flats over heels, but either way we've nixed the idea of strappy heels. Everybody's going to be wearing strappy heels, but she wore my ballet flats last year.
Hair depends on just how much she wants to freak out at prom. The best thing is to make sure your niece doesn't get an all out mad crazy high maintainance hairstyle she's going to spend the rest of the night worrying about.
Make up definitely pulls the look together. Again. It's best if she doesn't go all out because nobody's going to be there to fix her make up once it's run.
No pictures. Just grab a copy of Teen Vogue (best teen magazine by far because it overlooks all the mallrat fashion trends the other teen girl magazines follow) for more guidance.
Last of all, in the end it's not so much how awesome the outfit is but moreso how much fun she's going to have at prom.

At my graduation prom last year, my friends and i went to the saloon, but did our own make up. simple, but it make us feel gorgeous enough. Our dresses were more of the fun elegant party dresses that you see in boutiques. There are a lot of places where prom dresses can be bought for a relatively cheap price, such as Blook, or Nichii
Well, it also depends on what sort of girl your niece is. If she is the girlie type, of course a nice dress would be good.
My daughter just had a mini graduation dinner as well (she's 12) but refuses to wear anything pretty. I had a hard time finding something for her. Some of her friends turned up in slinky black dresses with make up on!
Here in Australia, a friend's daughter once asked to borrow an evening bag from me, so I had a chance to know how they dress for that one special night of their lives. They are exquisitely turned out in formal evening gowns, above elbow length gloves, complemented with a sparkly evening bag and elegant jewellery. They will shop for that one special gown which will often carry a price tag of hundreds of dollars.
This is totally unheard of in my days as a form 6 freshie at St John's.

velocity: hey there! thanks a bunch for the info. I guess i might have to drop by MPH and breez through teen magazines then! I think flat is something NOT to wear during proms!! u have to look tall...and feel tall!! flats just...take the elegance away...IMHO.
yuenny: nichii is not the same as before...the price use to be very cheap but nowadays they are pretty "standard"...blook is cool :) ok so a simple party dress rather than gowns ya... i suppose so for Malaysia.

Yes, but she did manage to dance all night in her ballet flats unlike her friends who weren't used to high heels (lets face it, it'd be cheating if they wore kitten heels) and sort of couldn't even get through a whole song without taking a break. It's girly without being TOO girly, and comfortable for hyperactive kiddies.
hehe...point taken...true also teens might not be comfortable with heels...
i think ballet flats will look gorgeous...i like flats with alot of straps that goes around the calf...
what do u think about 1 1/2 inch heels??
or wedges?? some wedges can look pretty good...
EH~~ Ms FA, I'll be one of the best men in my fren's wedding in January back home... I've got a pair of black suit, but dunno what tie to match with what shirt... LOL!

Wah.....Best men wor....:) i realize that when u leave the bestmen alone to decide on his own what to wear, he'll appear un-color-coordinated. :P
hehe...so the first thing you should do is to ask the bride what is the theme color, as in what would the bridesmaid be wearing. Normally they go in themes, like different shades of lilac, or ivory, or gold..etc...
So, the black tux is safe, just need to get the right color tie (that matches the bridgesmaid color). You can go with a white shirt to be safe, but if u want, you can go with something light, which is in the same color-tone with the tie. For example if u know the theme is purple. Get a light shade of purple as the shirt and a darker purple for tie. Comprende?? hehe....hope that helps! and get a good haircut!!!!
fashionasia 1 1/2 heels, I stay away from. Not enough height to look good and terrible for your posture. Not saying that my posture is great or anything anymore. Wedges are great, if they're super tall.
